Pet fees 'ruff' on pensioners

PENSIONERS are paying up to keep pets under Fraser Coast Regional Council fee structures.

Current budget allowances offer no discounts to elderly concession holders wanting to have pets on their property.

Information found on a multitude of Queensland council websites, including Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich city councils, shows huge discounts for pensioners.

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell said his government spent considerable time discussing and deliberating the budget.

"A discount for pensioners on pet registration was discussed and will be discussed in the lead up to the next budget," Cr O'Connell said.

"Our overriding consideration is to present balanced budgets that are equitable to everyone."

Cr O'Connell said programs and services put in place since the last budget would prevent changes before next year.

But River Heads pensioner Bev Burke, who is struggling to afford to keep two maltese terriers, suggested a year was too long.

The widowed woman only hears at 4% capacity and is almost completely blind in one eye. As such, her dogs are an essential part of her life.

"When the phone rings, one of them sort of looks at me like 'are you going to get that'," she said.

"If someone comes to the door or walks past the house they will let me know, also."

Mrs Burke is faced with charges of $210 to legally house her pets each year - they are not desexed.

Pensioner dog fees (not desexed)

  • Fraser Coast - $105.00
  • Logan City - $89.00
  • Ipswich City - $72.00
  • Gold Coast - $54.00
  • Brisbane City - $49.60
  • Bundaberg - $40.00
  • Brisbane City - $49.60
