No reforms for Queensland lawyers

QUEENSLAND will not sign up to national legal profession reforms.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the national scheme created an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy and financial burden.

He said 85% of Queensland solicitors were sole practitioners and would gain only increased costs through the reforms.

The Federal Government believes the reforms would protect the public by promoting national consistency in the law applying to the Australian legal profession and ensuring lawyers maintained high ethical standards.
