Noosa Triathlon 2009

THE Noosa Triathlon is back again for 2009, with 8500 plus athletes set to run, swim and cycle their way through the beautiful Noosa Heads.

Now in its 27th year, the Noosa Triathlon has grown and evolved into a five-day festival, combining sport, music, food and fireworks, and of course, the big race itself.

Organisers are already saying this year's event is the biggest in the history of the race, officially overtaking the Chicago Triathlon as the second biggest race in the world, following only the London Triathlon.

Unfortunately, individual and team places for this year's event have already reached capacity. If you're still desperate to participate in the race, you can put your name down on a waiting list in case there are late cancellations or withdrawals.

The Course
The Noosa Triathalon is the second largest Olympic length triathlon in the world and involves athletes completing a 1500m swim in a sheltered canal, a 40km cycle over an undulating road course through the area surrounding Noosa, and a 10km run through Noosa Sound.

Registration for all competitors will take place on Friday 30th October 3:00pm-6:00pm and Saturday 31st October 11:00am-4:00pm in the registration tent in the Festival Village, Noosa Woods.


You will need to bring along an official form of identification (Driver's License, Passport) as well as a printed copy of your receipt. A copy of your receipt can be printed from your Members Area.

All competitors will be issued with a race number and ID wristband. You will also be given a bike security sticker, bike number, helmet sticker, swim cap and timing band. You must wear your ID wristband at all times during the race, including before the start on Sunday.

You will also receive a written race briefing - please read this carefully as this is your only race briefing.  Please check all the numbers on each item match and you have been given the correct colour swim cap for your wave start.

After you've picked up your essential race ID's, head over to the event bag collection area where you will be given your event bag containing a singlet, visor, water bottle & bar, Triathlon Multi Sport Magazine and lots more.

Team Registration    
Teams will receive 1x race number, 3x ID wristbands, 1x helmet sticker, 1x bike security sticker, 1x Eyeline swim cap and 1x timing band per team (all team members must wear the timing band, passed from each team member like a relay baton).  It is only necessary for one team member to register for their team, but they must be able to pass on the team kit to the other team members BEFORE race start.

The cut off for athlete registration is 4:00pm sharp on Saturday. It is your responsibility to make sure you arrive on time, so allow for mishaps when making travel arrangements. 

  It is ILLEGAL for someone to race under your name or for you to race under the wrong name - this will result in suspension from your State Triathlon Association and you will not be not insured while racing.

Preparing to race

Pre-race fitness
While the Noosa Triathlon is open to anyone, it is essential that you feel physically fit enough to finish the race before you enter. Be aware of your limits and don't attempt to push your body too hard. If you do run into trouble out on the course, medical stations will be close at hand to attend to you, but it is important you notify an official or another competitor promptly.

Make sure you come early and come prepared to race. Ensure you have dry clothing to change into after the race, water bottles for pre-race hydration, race details maps, food and drink and sunscreen.

A final mechanical check of your bike is also a good idea. If you are unable to do this  
yourself, book your bike into a local bike shop a few days prior to the event. It is your responsibility to ensure that your bike is roadworthy.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure you are properly hydrated before you begin your activity. If you are dehydrated before you start, conditions like heat stress and heat stroke become real dangers. Aim to drink at least 500ml of fluid prior to exercise and continue drinking throughout the event and for up to two hours after you finish.

Festival entertainment
The Noosa Triathlon has grown to be more than just a race, with a huge variety of entertainment and fun on offer across the five days. Some of the great events include:

  • Lifestyle Expo - featuring the latest fitness and training equipment to get you into shape;
  • Festival Village Fiesta - with roving entertainment, face painting, balloons, lollies for the kids, jugglers, stilt walkers, magicians, food stalls and a bar;
  • kids treasure hunt;
  • Legends golf day;
  • celebrity footballers race;
  • cocktail carrying competition;
  • loads of live music; and
  • fireworks!
Road closures and parking
Because of the size of the Noosa Triathlon, some road closures are unavoidable. Additional information will be printed in the Noosa Journal on the 29th of October. Police, council and Main Roads approvals are in place for these closures.

Spectator Tips
You might not be out on the course, but it's still important to slip, slop, slap and keep you water intake up. Try to avoid driving if you can, as the traffic restrictions will be heavily enforced by event authorities and the police.
