North Coast Heat the latest National Gridiron League team
AS HAYNE Plane fever sweeps across the nation there is a plan for Fraser Coast athletes to follow in the former rugby league star's footsteps.
The National Gridiron League has so far announced eight teams on Australia's east coast.
The competition's inaugural season is planned to feature five teams in New South Wales (including Canberra) and four Queensland teams, though the NGL has outlined plans to expand into Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
Starting in August 2016, the NGL season is scheduled to feature an 18-week regular season before the three-week playoffs.
NGL's website says it has planned for the last two years, though the competition could receive a timely boost thanks to the success of Jarryd Hayne.
Hayne walked away from rugby league last year to chase his NFL dream, and has now played two games for San Francisco 49ers.
The North Coast Heat will be based on the Sunshine Coast, though a training park and home ground are yet to be announced.
As the northernmost NGL team it will be the closest side for Fraser Coast's budding American Football players.
Gridion Queensland's current competition features nine men's teams, six women's teams and seven colts teams between the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, with one club in Toowoomba.
GQ was founded in 1983, and along with other state bodies is aligned with Gridiron Australia.
