Former NRL star launches book

FORMER NRL star Scott Hill has had the benefit of serving under some of Australia’s greatest coaches and now he wants to impart some of their wisdom to the athletes of tomorrow.

Hill has called the Sunshine Coast home since retiring from first grade football in 2008 following 13 years in the NRL and English Super League and five NSW Origin and 10 Test appearances.

The former Melbourne Storm five-eighth is now preparing to enter a new phase of his life as an author.

Yesterday he launched his new book, Sports Wisdom Revealed: The Coaches, the first of a planned seven-book series he has co-authored with friend and former athlete and physiotherapist David Becker.

Hill said it was just as important for the new breed to learn about the philosophy of sport as it was to learn the basic mechanics of running and passing.

“It’s about self-discipline, about communicating in a team environment, about dealing with defeat, with self-esteem,” he said.

“Things like that are so important for individuals to be strong and confident. What sport does is help bring out those attributes.”

Hill said he rated former Melbourne coaches Chris Anderson and Craig Bellamy and Brisbane and St George-Illawarra mastermind Wayne Bennett, who he served under at Test level, as the best he has worked with.

He said invariably the best coaches were the ones that took a whole-of-life approach to coaching and took an active interest in their players.

The book includes interviews with some of Australian sport’s most well-known coaches including Laurie Lawrence (swimming), Ron Barassi (AFL) and Frank Farina (football).

Hill and Becker yesterday launched the book at Matthew Flinders Anglican College at Buderim as a way of thanking the students and parents of the school, some of whom provided the authors with their opinion and feedback on the project.
