Seagulls to field a women's side

TERESA Williams wasn’t sure what the response would be when she announced that the Hervey Bay Seagulls were hoping to field a side in the womens competition that Bundaberg Rugby League officials are looking to get up and running next year.

She needn’t have worried.

The Seagulls held a meeting on the weekend and the women of the Fraser Coast were asked to attend to express their interest if they were keen to be in the side.

The girls from Xavier Catholic College were keen to express their interest – they play rugby league regularly and were thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in a regular competition.

Along with about a dozen girls from Xavier, about six others were also keen to get in on the action.

Williams said the club would be asking the women to spread the word and find out how many others were interested on the Fraser Coast.

“They’re definitely excited about it and we have had a lot of interest so far,” she said.

“We’ve had some really good feedback.

“I’m sure we will be able to field at least one team.”
