Outriggers celebrate silver medals

THE HERVEY Bay outriggers competing with the Wide Bay-Bundaberg Honus Outrigger Club definitely did themselves proud on the weekend, coming home with five silver medals, finishing just behind the highly-rated Mooloolaba team.

This was the first sprint competition for 2010 and the junior paddlers were well prepared for some tough competition.

“The Mooloolaba teams were the ones to beat this year so we were very pleased with the silver medals,” coach Kim Polglase said.

“It really gives the juniors something to strive for when they get so close to the top teams.

“The sprints really are a lot of fun.

“They raced 250m straight sprints and also a 750m with three turns which is a real challenge, especially for the steerers.

“They really have to come into the turns at just the right time and pull these huge six-man canoes around the buoys then pick their power up to pull the canoes out and get them up and running again.”

The club will be looking to build on its success in the coming weeks.

The club will be training hard again this week as it prepares for the National Sprint Titles, which will be held on the Gold Coast in February.
