Parliamentary law reform to protect public servant wages
LAW reform aimed at protecting the wage conditions of outsourced public servants in Queensland has been introduced into Federal Parliament.
Employment Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten visited Queensland last month to spruik the changes to the Fair Work Act to ensure employees retained their conditions.
The Fair Work Act's transfer of business provisions protect employee entitlements where a business changes hands and the new employer employs the old employer's workers to do the same job.
Under the Queensland Government's reforms, if a service is outsourced to the private sector, former public servants will see their existing terms and conditions and accrued entitlements protected.
Queensland Council of Unions president John Battams said there was a role for the Commonwealth Government to ensure it protected workers.
"This federal legislation is closing up some gaping loopholes and this LNP government should support the amendments if they are serious about governing for all Queenslanders," he said.
These provisions currently only operate where both the old and new employers are covered by the national workplace relations system.
