Robber returns to the slammer

A HOTEL robber who fled down a Townsville street after grabbing several hundred dollars from a cash register has pleaded guilty to stealing.

Darryl Raymond Green was captured on CCTV camera when he robbed The Strand Hotel at Townsville on February 26.

He entered the hotel through a staff entrance about 6pm and walked into the gaming room before moving to the bar area.

Green reached over the bar and moved the cash register towards him, then opened the cash drawer and stole $660.

He ran off down the road and was caught a short time later.

The 35-year-old was on parole at the time of the offence and was returned to prison after being arrested and charged with stealing.

He appeared in custody in Maryborough Magistrates Court this week.

Defence solicitor Judy Millward said Green had been working in the roofing industry at the time of his arrest.

He had been in jail for several months and had done maths and English courses while imprisoned as well as working in the prison kitchen, Ms Millward said.

Magistrate John Smith sentenced Green to six months in jail.

Green will be able to apply for parole on October 29.
