AFTER a long battle, pathology services and jobs will be returning to the Maryborough Hospital.

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick will join Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders on Tuesday afternoon to make the announcement.

"The Government has listened and pathology services will be reinstated, with two staffing positions to be created to deliver the new service," he said.

Mr Dick said he had listened to the local community and pathology services would be reinstated at Maryborough Hospital.

"Today's announcement is a significant milestone for the Maryborough community who have been calling for these services to be returned to the hospital since they were closed under the LNP in 2012," he said.

"We will be building the capacity of Maryborough Hospital's Emergency Department as we take this vital first step in returning local pathology services."

Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders welcomed the announcement as a "win for the local community".

"The Minister has listened to local voices and is really delivering for our region, strengthening local healthcare services," he said.

For the past three years pathology samples have been transported by courier services between Maryborough and Hervey Bay hospitals.

"Today's announcement means 95 per cent of all urgent pathology work will be carried out onsite at the hospital.," Mr Saunders said.

Mr Dick said the additional staff will provide training for hospital staff, assist in testing and maintain the quality assurance process required for the equipment.

"The Maryborough community can feel confident that their health care needs are being looked after. This is all about boosting frontline services for local people," he said.
