Gallen ends short-lived rep retirement to lead City Origin

PAUL Gallen has made a quick return to representative football after being named as captain of the City side for next week's clash against Country.

The game at Mudgee on May 7 will be the final City v Country game and Gallen was asked to play by coach Brad Fittler after calling time on his representative career following last year's State of Origin.

Fittler wanted Gallen to help guide the younger players in the City side.

"I feel honoured to be stepping out of retirement to captain the City side in the last ever Country v City match," Gallen told the NSWRL.

"This fixture allows players on the cusp of an Origin call-up the chance to perform on the big stage and push their claim for a spot in Laurie Daley's NSW side.

"Having lost my only game for City, I'd love to lead the side to victory.

"There will be a number of potential Origin candidates who I hope to pass on my experience and knowledge to."
