Pilferers pinch petrol from Poona

“GET OFF your backside and do something useful rather than stealing other people’s property.”

Those were Magistrate John Smith’s words of advice to an unemployed Maryborough man who appeared in court on a stealing charge.

Roger James Whalen, 19, pleaded guilty in the Maryborough Magistrates Court to nicking a jerry can of fuel from a Poona property with two friends on October 5.

The court heard Whalen and his friends settled for the jerry can after they were unable to remove an outboard motor from a boat.

Defence lawyer Judy Millward told the court that while her client admitted that he helped his friends carry the jerry can he denied entering the property.

Whalen was fined $350.
