MP Keith Pitt floats $10m dive wreck idea
FEDERAL Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt is calling for council, State Government and community support to establish a dive wreck site in the Wide Bay region to attract tourists from around the world.
Mr Pitt said businesspeople had contacted him to express their desire to see a new tourist attraction in the region that will complement existing operations.
"The region is renowned for whale watching and turtle spotting, and Hervey Bay recently secured the right to host the Australian Fishing Championships for the next three years," Mr Pitt said.
"Despite our natural assets, the region's potential for a scuba diving industry is largely unrealised."
Mr Pitt said that depending on the size, condition and age of the vessel, the cost of decommissioning and sinking a wreck would be about $10 million.
"Similar projects have been estimated to be worth $5 million per year to the local economy, attracting about 5000 divers annually. About 90% of those divers are from outside the region."
