NSW player ratings for State of Origin II
IT was a true team effort as the NSW Blues edged Queensland in a State of Origin classic to win their first series since 2014.
Here are our NSW Blues player ratings for State of Origin II.
JAMES TEDESCO 7.5/10
Looked NSW's best attacking weapon in the first half. Went to the break with NSW's second most metres behind only David Klemmer. Threw a great pass from dummy half to put Latrell Mitchell over early in the second half. Another big performance from the fullback.
JOSH ADDO-CARR 7.5
Produced a clutch trysaving tackle on Dane Gagai to prevent the opener in the 9th minute. Gave away a silly penalty with a tackle in the air to give Queensland a free pass midway through the first half, then threw a forward pass in the next set. Got brushed off by Dane Gagai to leak a try in the 20th minute. Scored a great try to make amends soon after. A rocks and diamonds performance but the diamonds outshone the rocks.
JAMES ROBERTS 6.5
Looked solid in defence all night until he was sin binned with 11 minutes to go for obstructing his opposite Greg Inglis. Overall, a good performance.
LATRELL MITCHELL 9
Big defensive play to drag Dane Gagai into touch late in the first half. Ran over the top of Will Chambers to score the first try of the second half. Put a massive shot on Cameron Munster soon after. A bad error led to a Chambers try in the 62nd minute. He went close to creating a try soon after when he made a good break but then threw a stray flick pass which went into touch. One of the best players on the field.
TOM TRBOJEVIC 7.5
Left his wing to leave Val Holmes open for the first try of the night, having prevented one earlier with a knockdown. But was great in defence otherwise and had another big game on the right flank.
JAMES MALONEY 8
Credited with two try assists in the first half. First was a nice cut-out ball to Josh Addo-Carr, and the second was the grubber which led to the controversial penalty try. Shouldered the bulk of the duties and did almost all the NSW kicking.
NATHAN CLEARY 6.5
Was relatively quiet in attack, barely kicking at all and leaving the bulk of the playmaker up to James Maloney. His best moment came in the 72nd minute when he produced a fantastic sideline tackle on Val Holmes.
DAVID KLEMMER 7
Nine runs for 87 metes and 20 tackles in his first stint which lasted 36 minutes. Didn't make it back on the field.
DAMIEN COOK 7
Had four runs and an offload in the first half and looked dangerous at times. Kept quiet compared to game one from a Queensland side who learned their lesson.
MATT PRIOR 5.5
A decent first stint which lasted 25 minutes. Showed plenty of grunt when he ran the ball. Only credited with three runs for the night.
TYSON FRIZELL 7
Made 18 tackles before leaving the field for a HIA after 30 minutes. Went back on after half time and left the field in the 62nd minute after a solid stint, some of which was spent in the middle. Made 32 tackles and made eight runs but was again instrumental.
BOYD CORDNER 8
Was awarded a controversial penalty try when he was run off his line chasing a grubber in the first half. Got knocked out with five minutes left in the game and forced from the field. All up had 17 runs for 117 metres and it was another big performance from the skipper.
JACK DE BELIN 7.5
Made 12 tackles and was a monster in the middle of the field in his first stint, terrorising the Queennsland playmakers in particular. Another big tackle to force an error early in the second half. Finished with just five runs for the game but made 33 tackles and was a beast in defence all night, producing a number of big shots. Came back on late for the injured Boyd Cordner.
ANGUS CRICHTON 6.5
Came on for Tyson Frizell after 30 minutes but only had one run before being benched again at half time. Came back on midway through the second half. Three tackle breaks and two linebreaks in what was an impressive night off the pine.
PAUL VAUGHAN 6
Entered play after half an hour. Had 10 runs for more than 80 metres and came off midway through the second half.
JAKE TRBOJEVIC 7
First off the bench after 22 minutes. Ran for more than 100 metres and made a heap of tackles, was huge in the middle.
TYRONE PEACHEY 5
Came on with 10 minutes left in the game. Had a couple of electric runs and looked good with ball in hand.
