PM visits Gladstone to talk up Labor policies for industry

GLADSTONE apprentices got to take their "selfies" with the Prime Minister on Monday when he dropped in to our boom town to talk up his policies for more apprenticeships, jobs and industry partnerships.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd visited the Gladstone Area Group Apprentices Ltd (GAGAL) training centre before showing off his plan for Queensland, a 16-page document on how Labor would continue to create economic prosperity and opportunities in the state while also investing in fundamental services.

Although Brisbane would be the headquarters for the Mining, Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) Innovation Partnership, a $16 million funding plan would promote Australian services and products internationally.

Mr Rudd told The Observer the policies would "really hit the ground in major industrial centre like this".

"All our announcements about apprenticeships actually directly funnel here, so the reason we're here is that these guys will benefit from the extra Tools for Your Trade announcement and also benefit from the Australian industry participation plans because you've got so many large corporations here," he said.

"This is not just Brisbane-centric, it extends across the whole state including the major works for industry here.

"It's a great city."

Local radio DJs Browny and EJ cut through the seriousness of policy questions when Browny piped in, welcoming Mr Rudd's support of marriage equality and asking whether Mr Rudd "could marry someone like Tony Abbott".

The question left Mr Rudd, with his good mate - and Flynn's ALP candidate - Chris Trevor, shaking with laughter for a few seconds.
