Man charged for ramming police car

A MAN has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer after he rammed a police car to escape arrest near Millmerran.

Dalby Police senior constable Brad Allen said the Cecil Plains police officer tried to intercept a suspected drink-driver who was driving erratically on the Millmerran Cecil Plains Road at 6.15pm on Sunday.

Snr Const Allen said the 39-year-old driver took off at high speed and the police officer terminated the pursuit.

The officer was later driving back to Cecil Plains when he saw the same vehicle speeding around the fence line inside a paddock on Bostock Road at Lemontree, 15km north of Millmerran.

Snr Const Allen said the officer drove into the paddock and again tried to intercept the dangerous driver at 7.05pm.

“The (offender’s) car has lined him up and rammed him,” he said.

The crash impact deployed the police vehicle’s airbags and the officer suffered bruising to his right shoulder.

Snr Const Allen said the offender left his blue Mitsubishi Magna sedan on scene and fled on foot.

The Toowoomba dog squad patrolled the area but the offender was not located.

Paramedics took the injured police officer to the Millmerran Hospital.

Snr Const Allen said police were still on scene investigating the crash when the offender returned to try to take his car at 12.15am.

He was arrested and taken to the Toowoomba Police Watchhouse.

He was also charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and will appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court this morning.

The incident was similar to another attempted murder charge near Warwick on New Year’s Eve.

Tommie Ray McCarthy, 24, was charged with attempted murder after he drove at police officers while they tried to intercept his stolen car at Clintonvale.

Police were able to step out of the path of the car and were not injured.

Dalby Criminal Investigation Branch detectives are investigating Sunday night’s incident.
