Police urge community to be wary of online dating dangers
POLICE have warned about the dangers of internet dating after a man drove from the ACT to Queensland to meet up with a 13-year-old girl and her mother.
Geoffrey Richard Thompson, 55, did not meet the pair when he arrived in Brisbane, instead detectives arrested him.
Police did not oppose bail when he appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with attempting to procure a child.
The court heard he had no criminal history and was likely to return to the ACT.
Police will allege he used the internet to attempt to coordinate a meeting for sexual activity with a woman and her 13-year-old daughter.
He did not know Taskforce Argos officers had been courting him online as part of Operation Kilo Beau.
Detective Inspector Jon Rouse, from Task Force Argos, said: "We continue to urge all parents to watch who their children are befriending and chatting to online, and we also need to enforce that parents themselves need to take care when engaging with someone they have just met or barely know online".
