Polson Cemetery to expand

THE Fraser Coast Council is to expand the Polson Cemetery at Point Vernon to provide burial space for Hervey Bay for the next 15 years.

Reports this year into whether the cemetery, or its surrounds, would be suitable for natural burials have come back negative.

The council has now moved to create room for a cemetery that is nearing capacity.

The Polson cemetery will expand into bushland within the existing reserve, while maintaining most of its mature trees.

It is hoped the expansion will create space for an extra 1250 grave sites.

There will also be 100 grave sites for traditional land owners.

If the council had not moved to expand, the cemetery would have reached capacity within eight years as it has only 647 graves left.
