Poppins Party opens two-week long festival
AS THE entree to the Maryborough's Mary Poppins Festival, the Poppins Party will be steam-powered by theatrical dress-ups, vintage vehicle displays and a variety of street foods.
The festival presents a two-week program of storytelling for all ages through all art forms from Friday, June 29 to Sunday, July 8.
Maryborough City Progress Association president Kylie Nitz said the CBD streets will be closed for the Poppins Party.
"As the progress association we are lead facilitators working with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, business community and council," Kylie said.
"We have re-introduced the food vendors and there will be a great variety including baked potatoes, chip on a stick and an Indian twist on Mexican street food.
"There will be the vintage cars doing laps, kids entertainment like jumping castle, rock climbing and laser tag.
"Maryborough Market stallholders have been invited to join in the festivities and businesses to keep their doors open."
Kylie said this was a great opportunity for patrons who don't normally get to shop in the CBD to come and have a look.
"We have organised a Mary Poppins Umbrella Hunt where patrons have to find a written word throughout the CBD and the shops," she said.
"Sample bags will be given to those entering the hunt. There is so much going on."
Maryborough people love an excuse to dress-up, so there will be a Steampunk Teaser introduced to the program for the Maryborough Street Party on June 29.
Put together your best Steampunk costume and join in the fun.
The Steampunk festivities will include a steam engine display by Wide Bay Historic Engine Club, Vintage Car parade, Remote Control Car Club races with a Tea Pot Racing presentation, Steampunk Tea Cosy display and Tea Duelling competitions brought to you by the Kilted Dog with entertainment from the RSL's Pipe Band.
Kylie also suggested an alternative to those attending the play Happy Ever After at the Brolga.
"The play will be starting at 7pm at the Brolga, so you can come in, celebrate the opening of the festival, grab a bite to eat and head on over to the play."
Steampunk themed Maryborough Street Party, The Poppins Party, will be held in Adelaide Street (between Ellena and Kent Streets) and Kent Street (from Lennox to Bazaar Streets) from 5.30-8pm on Friday, June 29.
