Popular island race tomorrow

THE BIG race around Big Woody Island will kick off tomorrow.

The annual race, which is held in honour of the late local sailor Robbie Batchelor, who died in 2001, is always keenly contested by sailors from around the Fraser Coast.

There will be a staggered start to the race, which will start at 9.30am.

The 27km course is a lap of Big Woody Island in an anti-clockwise direction.

The handicap start helps to ensure the finish will be excitingly close as the whole fleet races to the finishing line, vying for the trophy.

There will be two separate fleets contesting the event.

Deep-keeled yachts will sail clockwise around the northern end of the island and turn to sail home while the other fleet will sail around the southern end of the island.

The fleet will be expected back about three hours after the start of the race.

All sailors wishing to compete can attend the race briefing at the Hervey Bay Yacht Squadron.
