Portland stab accused has a rant in court

THE man accused of fatally stabbing two people who intervened to defend two young women against his anti-Muslim rant has made a defiant appearance in court in the US state of Oregon.

Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, appeared in a County Circuit Court on three felony murder charges, one felony assault charge, three felony weapons charges and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation.

Police say Christian started verbally abusing the two women, one wearing a hijab, aboard a train on Friday.

When three men intervened, he allegedly attacked them, killing two and wounding one.

Christian failed to enter a plea but was vocal in court, yelling: "Death to the enemies of America. Leave this country if you hate our freedoms.

"You call it terrorism. I call it patriotism.”

Micah Fletcher, the good Samaritan who survived the attack, sat in the front row of the court gallery, his stitched neck wound visible.

Three crowdfunding campaigns for the victims have topped $US1 million.

Christian's next court date is on Wednesday, June 7.
