Premier supports Pearce for chair role, despite QRC concerns

LABOR has dug its heels in against an angry mining sector, backing under fire Mirani MP Jim Pearce.

Mr Pearce received a thrashing from the Queensland Resources Council after he unleashed a lengthy listed of problems in the industry during a speech to parliament.

The QRC retorted that it was concerned about Mr Pearce deliberating on legislation affecting the sector as the infrastructure, planning and natural resources committee chair.

After repeated questioning from the Opposition over Mr Pearce's suitability for the role, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Coralee O'Rourke, Minister Assisting the Premier on North Queensland, voiced their support for Mr Pearce.

Ms Palaszczuk said Mr Pearce was passionate about jobs in the mining sector and he made no excuses for that passion.

"We are passionate about creating jobs; we are passionate about the potential that the mining sector provides," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk said she spoke with him on Thursday morning about "the role that he plays in terms of treating everyone fairly and with dignity".
