Pressure eased on Gunners boss after Cup win

FOOTBALL: Arsene Wenger says his team has regained its confidence after an easy 5-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over non-league Lincoln City.

Wenger and his side has been under pressure with a humiliating 10-2 aggregate defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League and an English Premier League loss to Liverpool.

But after looking nervous in the first half, Theo Walcott opened the scoring just before half-time and that allowed the Gunners to relax.

Olivier Giroud put the hosts in control just after half-time.

Lincoln's dreams of a fight back were dashed when Luke Waterfall scored an own goal, turning in Kieran Gibbs' cross.

Alexis Sanchez added a brilliant fourth before Aaron Ramsey completed the win.

"We have been short of confidence after some disappointing results recently," said Wenger, who was the subject of protests from fans at the Emirates following Arsenal's run of five defeats in seven games before thsi Cup clash.

"When the confidence was there in the second half, our quality came back.

"It was all us in the second half but you have to congratulate Lincoln for what they have achieved in the FA Cup."

Meanwhile, goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero gave Manchester City a deserved win over Middlesbrough and earned Pep Guardiola's side a place in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Silva scored just three minutes in and while Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Guzan produced a number of fine saves to deny Silva, Leroy Sane and and Aguero, the Argentine finally made the result safe for the visitors when he converted from Sane's low cross.
