PRO DARTS: Van den Bergh promises more of the same in Mackay

DIMITRI Van den Bergh has promised some more exhilarating darts when the inaugural International Pro Darts Showdown Series finishes in Mackay tonight (Sat) and tomorrow (Sun).

The Belgian was in spectacular form on Thursday night as he took out the Townsville leg of the month-long tour run by News Corp, which has also been to Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The reigning youth world champion defeated 16-time senior world champ Phil "The Power" Taylor 7-5 in the final on a night where he scored heavily and finished superbly.

Van den Bergh, 23, who is only on the tour in the place of Simon Whitlock, who had to return to the UK for PDC commitments after winning on the Gold Coast, said he had enjoyed himself at a packed Townsville Stadium and promised more of the same in Mackay.

"It was fantastic to win in Townsville," he said.

"Especially as it was my first real tournament here."

Van den Bergh, known more in Australia for his dance moves on his walk-in, soon became a crowd favourite because of his top-class play in Townsville but was still surprised fans were getting behind him instead of Taylor.

"I am definitely happy with that," he said of the support.

"I am only playing Phil for the second time in my career, so I didn't know whether the crowd would go for me or him.
"The most important thing for me is enjoying it up there (on the stage).

"Phil is the biggest man in darts in my eyes and will always be that way."

Van den Bergh said there would be one way to round off what had already proved to be a perfect first trip to Australia and that was to hit a nine-dart leg in Mackay and put on another show.

"For me it's something special because I am playing darts in Australia," he said.

"I am seeing things I have never seen before, so I am going to continue to enjoy it and entertain the fans again this weekend."

Tickets are still available for the Mackay tournament at Mackay Entertainment Centre from Ticketek.
