Properties could be hit by big fire levy from State Govt

FRASER Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell has blasted the State Government about a proposed new fire levy that could add up to $140 to Fraser Coast rates bills.

Cr O'Connell said the State Government planned to introduce the levy on all rateable properties in Queensland, and the levy would be added to the council's rates notices.

"State Government charges shouldn't be on council rate bills," Cr O'Connell said.

He said the proposed levy could add up to $140 to some rural properties, with urban properties believed to be set to pay less under the levy.

"There was absolutely no consultation with local councils," Cr O'Connell said.

He said the State Government needed to discuss this issue with the Local Government Association of Queensland before the State budget was delivered.
