Prostitute faces court after undercover police operation

A WOMAN has fronted court on a prostitution charge after a sting by undercover officers at a Buderim motel.

Cuizhen Peng, 45, was charged by officers from the Prostitution Enforcement Taskforce investigating complaints about sex workers operating from the motel.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Tony Melmeth said a covert officer from the taskforce rang a mobile number in a newspaper escort ad and arranged an outcall to a Mooloolaba unit on February 23.

After watching one of two Asian women at a motel unit leave in a taxi, police made another call to the same number and arranged an in-call.

Snr Const Melmeth said Peng answered the door and offered a "full service" for $100 for a half an hour.

When the undercover officer asked if there were any girls available for his friend, Peng referred him to a woman in another unit at the motel, Snr Const Melmeth said.

When confronted, Peng denied being involved in prostitution with any other woman and said three of her four mobile phones were to take calls for different advertisements that she placed in newspapers.

Her solicitor, Alicia Thomas, said the Chinese emigrant had got into prostitution when her now ex-husband was not working and her nursing wage would not meet their mortgage repayments.

Ms Thomas said her client lived in Sydney but worked on the Sunshine Coast.

She said Peng had simply answered a friend's phone that night to help out but accepted that she had broken the law.

The law prohibits a person's involvement in the provision of prostitution by anyone else except in a legal brothel.

Peng, who pleaded guilty to knowingly participating in the provision of prostitution and possession of tainted property, was placed on a six-month good behaviour order. No conviction was recorded.

Similar charges against another woman were dropped after the police offered no evidence.
