Punch-up started with argument over shaving cream

A HOUSEMATE dispute over shaving cream has led to a racist taunt and a punch in the face.

Trent James O'Neill punched his housemate, who was in a wheelchair because of a disability, in the face during the heated exchange.

He was sentenced today for seriously assaulting the man at the Ferny Hills home they shared in Brisbane's west.

Brisbane Magistrates Court heard O'Neill, 21, had a mental disability including a mild intellectual impairment

There had been ongoing tensions between the two men before the incident in April last year.

The housemates started arguing over who owned a bottle of shaving cream.

The man in the wheelchair called O'Neill, an indigenous Australian, a racist name and O'Neill punched him in the face.

The court heard he was on parole for another offence at the time.

O'Neill has been in jail since the assault and the magistrate took this into account when sentencing him.

He was sentenced to 196 days jail, which he had already served, meaning he would be released immediately on parole.
