Purple reigns in 2018

Some of the latest trends to watch out for include colour - and by colour, I mean strong colour.

Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2018 is not for the faint-hearted. It is ultra violet. Pantone's Color of the Year has become a touchstone not just for designers and decorators, but also a measure of the zeitgeist.

It is a glimpse into the psyche of the world, and the colour reflects where we are and where we are headed.

Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to this colour.

Purple is often associated with royalty and religious ceremonies.

The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces is also common, as it is believed to inspire spiritual connection.

Complex and contemplative, the colour purple, according to Pantone, also suggests the mysteries of the cosmos and the discoveries beyond where we are now.

Purple also represents unconventionality and artistic brilliance. Musicians Prince and David Bowie brought shades of purple into their expressions of individuality.

Nuanced and full of emotion, Pantone's Ultra Violet symbolises experimentation and non-conformity and spurs individuals to imagine their mark on the world and to push the boundaries through creative outlets.
