Rain grounds flights and closes roads

FLIGHTS have been grounded as heavy rainfall lashes Mackay and the Queensland coast.

Jetstar and Qantas flights to and from Mackay to Brisbane, Townsville, Gladstone and Rockhampton were cancelled yesterday from 9am.

Mackay Airport general manager Rob Porter said once conditions eased, flights would be operational again.

"Three inbound flights to Mackay were diverted to other airports this morning during the period of heavy rainfall," he said.

"They were two QantasLink services and one Jetstar service.

"As a result, the outbound flights which those aircraft were scheduled to operate had to be cancelled.

The airlines are working to assist all passengers affected by diversions and cancellations."

Roads were also closed across the region.

Yesterday Golf Links Rd at the crossing, Heaths Rd at Windmill Crossing, Barry's Lane at Eton Crossing and Keeleys Rd were closed.

Meanwhile, Bureau of Meteorology media liaison Ken Kato said the wet weather was not going to ease up, just yet.

"It should be pretty cloudy and showery with rain more along the coastal strip," he said.

"So far for Mackay itself 36mm has fallen and further inland more like 10-25mm. West of Mackay will see some decent falls by the time this event is over."
