Rain delays opening of artspace
THE OPENING of Maryborough’s $1.5 million refurbished Gatakers Artspace has been pushed back a month because of the recent rain.
Fraser Coast councillor Linda Harris said workers would not be able to complete the landscaping, install a water feature and a lift in time for the proposed opening on Australia Day.
Instead the historic building, envisioned to become the hub of art and culture in Maryborough, would be opened in March when a range of cultural festivities are staged across the region.
“It is a disappointment but the postponement will give us time to ensure the landscaping is finished and artspace is ready for action,” said Ms Harris, the chair of the arts and culture portfolio.
“And it will be fitting to open what will become a hub of culture during March when there are so many cultural activities being held on the Fraser Coast including Shakespeare on the Bay and the Fraser Coast Cultural Festival.”
An Australia Day exhibition will be held at the Maryborough Art Gallery, in the old Wintergarden Theatre building on Kent Street.
