Rare glimpse of life of plants

FRASER Coast residents will have a rare chance to catch a glimpse of a glamorous hermaphrodite in the throws of copulation next week.

Each morning at 9.30 the Hervey Bay botanic gardens’ orchid house a Fraser Coast Regional Council horticulturalist will gently encourage a vanilla orchid to draw the male and female parts of its flower into an embrace that will hopefully, in about nine months, result in the development of a little vanilla bean pod.

Vanilla planifolia is the main species of orchid harvested to vanillum – the main ingredient in vanilla essence.

To find out more and watch the pollination, visit the orchid house at 9.30am from Monday. Entry is $2.50.
