Readers outraged at councillors’ remuneration increases
THE Fraser Coast Chronicle's readers are furious at the councillors awarding themselves a remuneration increase.
On Facebook readers vented about the extra $45,000 allocated to the whole council.
Jenny Sorensen wrote: "After the developments in the short time since the election I'm sure if we had a chance to vote again Loft would be out.
Do you think the remuneration increase is justified?
This poll ended on 21 April 2016.
Yes, they need more ways to connect
No, one iPad and phone is enough
I'm not sure
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
"(It's) the beginning of stuffing up the Fraser Coast and running it into the ground."
But Jade Wellings defended the councillors, saying, "They didn't get $4000 in cash. They are getting tools to help them do their jobs. Phones, printers, iPads and a budget for training and professional development.
"I want well-trained and well-equipped councillors who aren't afraid to work after-hours from their own homes because we gave them the tools to do so," she said.
Roz Molyneaux said: "That's right, the first most important item of business is lining their own pockets. Who would have believed it?"
Kerry Stevens was not surprised: "It's amazing but not surprising that of course they would give themselves more money instead of funding things that our community needs."
A poll on the Chronicle's website asked readers if the increase was justified, and 90% of respondents believed it was not.
Arthur Dunne: "(It's) always a bad sign when an incoming elected body's first order of business is to give themselves some sort of remuneration increase."
