Readers react to idea of ambos armed with tasers

"Give the paramedic's tasers."

This was the reaction from one of our readers after hearing the idea to arm ambulance officers with tasers.

The idea has been raised by Queensland Health Minister Cameron Dick following several assaults on paramedics but has been condemned by Caloundra MP and Shadow Health Minister, Mark McArdle, who described it as "ill-conceived" and claimed it had sparked "community outrage".

We asked our Facebook community is it really all that outrageous that our ambulance officers be armed with tasers?

Anne Heywood said while it was a sad fact of life that self-defence was necessary, tasers were a good idea.

"With more and more drugs and overdoses needing treatment the number of attacks on the people who try to help can only increase - give the paramedic's tasers," she said.

Debb Mackay disagreed and suggested a 'knock out drug' was a better option.

"I disagree, ambos should not have tasers, they should be armed with a type of knock out drug like an epi pen and when a patient gets out of control whack it in get on with the job, simple," she said.

Rob Lennon said "If you follow this reasoning and justification, then shouldn't all convenience store owners, taxi drivers and bank tellers also have tasers?
