Getting ready for a comp in the tropics? Come to Hervey Bay
HERVEY Bay is the perfect place to train for a coral lagoon swim competition in Fiji, competitors claim.
For the past three months eight swimmers from the Fraser Coast have been braving chilly Hervey Bay waters, training for the Fiji Ocean swim.
Next week the competitors will travel to the tropical nation to take part in the Mana Island ocean swim event.
Ranging from 25 to 67 years old, three competitors will swim 5km and the rest will swim 10km.
Regarded as a senior swimmer in the region, Greg Messer said the only qualification needed for the Fiji swim was ability.
"You've got to be a jolly good swimmer," he said.
He said training in Hervey Bay's flat waters would mirror the mostly protected coral lagoon swim in Fiji
"We're hoping it's not rough weather," he said.
"We're expecting stiff competition - if there's 300 people there and they're all good swimmers it will be tough competition."
The group expect the swim to help them train for the next event on the local calendar.
"When we come back from Fiji we've only got three of four weeks until the Hervey Bay 100," said
