Redbacks need to show bite against Bushrangers

SOUTH Australia will need to dramatically improve its batting if it wants to challenge Victoria in the Matador Cup clash at Bankstown Oval today.

The Redbacks were bowled out for just 141 in reply to Tasmania's 4-234 on Wednesday, the loss dropping them to fourth on the points table.

Australian hopeful and Redbacks star Callum Ferguson made just eight against the Tigers, after scores of 112 not out, one and 58 in the one-day tournament.

Opener Travis Head will also be hoping for a big score. The skipper notched a stunning double-century against Western Australia, before making a first-ball duck against New South Wales, 12 against Queensland and 38 against Tasmania.

Victoria was impressive in its last outing - a 36-run win over the Warriors - the result lifting the Bushrangers to second.

The team had a number of contributors, including all-rounders Glenn Maxwell (51 off 57 balls and 3-30), Dan Christian (60 off 66 and 1-11) and John Hastings (38 off 44 and 3-33).

It also has a fit-again aggressive new-ball quick bowler in James Pattinson.

Pattinson has taken two four-wicket hauls across his four Matador Cup games, against the Cricket Australia XI and Queensland.

The 25-year-old has re-modelled his action after a series of back injuries, and looks to be regaining the form that saw him play 13 Tests.

Former Australian captain Steve Waugh said this week the Australian long-form outfit needed someone such as Pattinson to provide the team with the aggression it has been lacking.
