Report names Western Australia as country's top economy

WESTERN Australia has again been named the strongest economy among the states and territories, but the ACT has overtaken the Northern Territory in second place.

CommSec's quarterly State of the States report shows no change in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, which remain in the middle of the rankings.

South Australia is still in seventh place, while Tasmania has the nation's worst-performing economy.

The report analyses eight key indicators, including economic growth, construction work, unemployment and investment.

It says Australia's housing sector is providing a source of new growth.
