Residents react to city's porn purge: 'Porn isn't cheating'

A CHURCH has taken steps towards making Toowoomba a city free from porn, but not all residents agree.

South Toowoomba Baptist Church is running the Conquer Series, which is a six-week course that pastor Daniel Wallis describes as AA for porn addicts.

It follows Toowoomba's anti-porn rally in Civic Square in October last year, where 250 men swore not to watch pornography.

The Chronicle shared the news with its Facebook followers where it was met with cries of shock.

Amanda Russell said: "How are they going to police what happens behind closed doors? Relationships end. Not all because of porn. If you don't like porn, don't watch it."

Joseph De Smet said: "What people do behind closed doors in their house is their business."

Vicki Trunks said: "Really? You cannot do that. That is a communist society. It is a free country."

Jaffa Hunter said: "I don't care if you love porn or hate it, stop trying to control adults, we can make our own choices and if there bad then that's how you learn."

Logan Anderson said: "So are you going to censor the internet or send cops around to everyone house to look at their browser history or what?"

Clinton Allen said: "Watching porn is not cheating."

Despite many people disagreeing with making Toowoomba a city free from porn, South Toowoomba Baptist Church pastor believes watching pornography was harmful for people of all ages and relationship statuses.

"For single people it slants their view on what a relationship actually is and for married people, it means they are cheating on their spouse," he said.

"Porn can desensitise people to normal arousal and then they need more to satisfy them."

The church is halfway through the first program but plans to hold more later in the year.
