Revolution rejoice after U20 team breaks its duck

THE losing streak is over ... finally.

For the Wide Bay Revolution under-20 players who put their heart and soul into the fledgling National Premier League club over the past eight or so months, Sunday's historic 2-0 victory over Palm Beach Sharks was as if it was their grand final.

After 15-straight defeats and looking to avoid being the only team in the competition to go winless for an entire season, the Revolution finally had something to celebrate in their final game of the year at Gympie's One Mile Oval.

They led 1-0 at the break, courtesy of a Joshua McEachran strike, before captain Percy Cash got on the end of a low cross from Hervey Bay's Johnny Cullen to send the strong crowd into ruptures.

"When Percy scored, he ran off the field to the crowd and all the players were all against the fence celebrating. It was unbelievable, it was like we had won the World Cup," Revolution coach Bill Mitchell said.

This whole season has been about the big picture for the Revolution, but Sunday's victory was a culmination of months of hard work and steady improvement with little to show for it.

"For the cornerstone of the team of about 10 players who have been there most of the year, the result was just reward and I'm really happy for them," Mitchell said.

"They wanted a victory before the end of the season and they've stuck with it and showed a lot of character.

"They've done what we wanted them to do and they've come up with the result even though it's at the end of the season, but they've been great."

In front of a strong home crowd containing many kids from the club's emerging program and junior teams, the Revolution brought a physical style of play to control the pace of the game.

Palm Beach struggled to cope with the pressure as the Revolution pounced on the Sharks' mistakes to create enough chances to win. Also pleasing for the Revolution was a first clean sheet of the season.
