Riders sights set on state titles

THREATENING rain clouds held off just long enough to allow for two fantastic days of competition at the Dundowran Equestrian Grounds at the weekend.

About 46 riders took to the arena for equitation on Saturday while some 60 competitors navigated their way around the showjumping ring on Sunday for the Hervey Bay Pony Club’s Official Equitation and Showjumping competitions.

Hervey Bay Pony Club president Lyndal Roos said the competitors, who travelled from towns such as Kingaroy, Mundubbera, Pomona, Gympie, Kia Ora, Bundaberg and Musgrave, dished out some tough competition.

Each rider had their sights set firmly on placing in the top 10 to qualify for the State Equitation and Showjumping in March 2011 in Toowoomba.

“The competition was of a great standard with the keenest groups being the 12-and-under and the D grade riders on the Sunday,” Ms Roos said

She said only a couple of minor falls happened over the weekend, but no major injuries recorded.

The Hervey Bay club is now preparing for its Gymkhana on Saturday, October 2 and an Intra Zone Teams Showjump Challenge on Sunday, October 3.

“Visitors are more than welcome to come along and enjoy the sport from the sidelines,” Ms Roos.
