Rocky’s own PBR star Jason Mara has eyes on victory

JASON Mara has called Rockhampton home for the past 10 years so it's no surprise the local bull rider wants to win the Rural Weekly Live Series PBR Champion title this weekend.

From a young age Jason, originally from a property in Cloncurry, knew he was going to be a professional bull rider after riding poddy calves on a property his father managed in the Northern Territory.

Jason, 29, said growing up around cattle taught him a certain respect for bulls.

"As a kid, I always said I was going to be a professional bull rider, before I even knew I could do it as a living," he said.

"As a rider, you just have a level of respect for the animal; you know they can hurt you but you train enough to know what you need to do in the arena and what not to do.

"Growing up with cattle helped me read them a lot better; you can't be scared of them in this sport, you have to be up for the challenge."

Jason, aka the Cloncurry Pocket Rocket, said he was looking forward to getting back in the ring after 12 weeks out due to an injury.

"There'll be a lot of rank bulls from the district and these are some of the best bulls in the country," he said.

"I'm riding a bull called Digger, he bucked me off last time so he's a pretty good bull but I'm keen to get back on him and do better.

"I get a little nervous in the seconds before I get let out into the arena but it's mostly a feeling of wanting to do the best job I can.

"That's what I love about the sport, as a bull rider you need to put in 110% to your personal performance every time because it's all you out there, there's no team to depend on."

Jason, who holds a 2015 PBR National Finals Qualifier title, will ride this Saturday night at the Rockhampton PBR.
