Saddle up for return

A LONG-range push to have a Clydesdales team back in the Queensland Cup is underway.

The Toowoomba Clydesdales have been missing from the state-wide rugby league scene since 2006 when the team was backed by the Brisbane Broncos.

Without the ongoing support of the Broncos the financially strapped Clydesdales folded and became a glaring absentee from the premier competition.

But, a move to resurrect the famous Clydesdales as a rugby league force is again underway following the announcement of a Toowoomba Rugby League independent sub-committee to explore avenues aimed at getting the team back into the representative arena.

Toowoomba businessman Paul Reedy has been elected chairman of an eight-man board put in place to lead a possible Clydesdales’ revival.

Reedy said a multi-layered strategy to rebuild the Clydesdales will be put in place aimed at returning the team to the Queensland Cup in five years time.

“Previously we have just had a Q Cup team, but our strategy this time is to build a base and pathway from our juniors up,” Reedy said.

“Eventually, I feel we’ll also need to align ourselves with an NRL club.

“Our first task is to establish a strong structure for our 16 and 18 rep sides and for the junior rep sides that are coming through the ranks,” Reedy said.

“We are now in the process of building a Fogs Cup Colts (20 years) side and Fogs A-Grade side with the view to the future of a Queensland Cup side.”

Reedy said securing financial backing will be pivotal to a successful a Clydesdales return.
