Sammy's a campsite star

MULTI-talented Sammy the Rosella can whistle the blues along with the best of 'em.

But it is not just the song Never Felt Like Singing the Blues she can whistle, her repertoire includes Pop Goes the Weasel and the Harlem Globe Trotters tune.

Owners Jimmy and Vera Traplin say the musical bird attracts quite a lot of attention.

“She wolf whistles at girls as they go past the camp,” Jimmy said.

“They think it's me...until I show them Sammy,” Jimmy laughed.

Sammy has also learnt a few choice phrases to go with her expert whistling.

Vera says Sammy loves saying “Give me a kiss” and “Love you Mummy”.

Then there is “Hello Jimmy” and “F*** off”.

The last phrase sure gets some laughs around the campsite.

Jimmy and Vera got nine-month-old Sammy at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and, since then, she never leaves their side.

She climbs up onto Jimmy's shoulder and gives him a kiss.

At the Muster site she has been roaming around the campsite, but Jimmy and Vera are a bit worried about all the goannas hanging around and now keep her securely in her cage.

“I think they are trying to eat her,” Jimmy said.

“They were up in the tree outside our camp for ages just waiting.”

Jimmy and Vera are from Tweed Heads and are camped up in the Amamoor Creek State Forest ready for their ninth Muster.

They say they love country music and the atmosphere at the Muster.

Not to mention all the friendly people and characters they meet while camping in the great outdoors.
