Pat and Brian celebrate 50 years
ON Pat Walsh’s wedding day 50 years ago there was snow on the ground but on Saturday, when she renewed her vows with husband Brian, there was sand between her toes.
Pat and Brian, who now live in Dundowran, met when they were teenagers at a dance in the town where they grew up in the north-east of England.
The two got engaged when Brian enlisted in the army and they exchanged vows on January 16, 1960.
The couple has two children, Jacqueline and Andrew. Andrew attended the vow renewal ceremony with his wife, Sam, and two of their three children.
The Walshes renewed their vows across the road from Peppers Pier Resort with a beautiful view of the ocean and the iconic Urangan Pier.
They have done a lot for others in their time – Pat has built a career in social welfare and donated a lot of her time to pony clubs over the years.
They have also been foster carers.
Brian is still involved with Meals on Wheels and, while Pat wryly admits that many of her friends think they are “crazy” for renewing their vows with a big celebration, it’s fitting that two people who have done so much for others get the chance to celebrate their own special milestone properly.
“A lot of people don’t make it this far,” Pat said.
Pat said the secret to their long and happy marriage was the fact that they were not just man and wife – they were also friends and had a lot of similar interests.
“We’ve shared a lot and had a lot of fun.”
