Save bags, environment: council

A VISIT to the supermarket usually results in a couple of plastic bags being thrown away at the end of the day.

But the staff at the Fraser Coast Regional Council are looking to change that after being inspired by the Coles Junior Landcare Plastic Bag Challenge to clean up the waste caused by plastic bags.

Collection bins have been placed at each of the council's customer service centres for people to drop off plastic bags.

They can be deposited in the bins up until the end of November.

Residents are encouraged to clear any plastic bags they might have at home and also be on the lookout for bags that have not been discarded properly, whether it is at the beach, in the parks or at sports grounds.

Many of the bags that have not been discarded properly end up in the water systems of the Fraser Coast where they kill and disable thousands of marine animals and sea birds every year.

Collection bins will also be at the Maryborough landfill and Nikenbah Transfer Station.
