SEGWAYS will soon be allowed on the footpaths of the Fraser Coast - but dedicated walkers, runners and bike riders need not worry too much about having to compete with the two-wheeled machines.

The only Segway operation in the region is run by Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island and is completely off-road.

Fraser Coast councillor Darren Everard said he was not aware of any businesses looking at establishing a similar venture elsewhere.

"There was a guy who wanted to hire them out on the Esplanade but he decided the paths weren't wide enough," he said.

Segway riders must be older than 12 and not travel more than 12kmh.
