SES volunteer an 'everyday hero' for saving baby boy

A TOOWOOMBA SES volunteer has been recognised for his tireless work and dedication to helping a baby boy who required urgent medical attention when stranded by floods.

Paul Kerans, 53, has been nominated for a Queensland Police Credit Union Everyday Heroes Award for his more than 30 years SES work, which brought him into contact with baby Thomas Dixon, now a thriving five-year-old.

"There were no available helicopters that day because the devastation was so vast, so we were called to the boy's home to try and get the family out by road," Mr Kerans explains the scene during the 2011 floods.

"It took us six hours in a four-wheel drive to travel just 5km, constantly winching out of trouble, to get on the sealed road for the trip to medical help.

"It's great to see young Thomas doing so well now and he's a constant reminder that all the hard work is worth it."

Now in its third year, the QPCU Everyday Heroes Awards are conferred in the categories of Dedication, Working Together, Excellence, Ownership, Achievement and the Young Everyday Hero.

Award winners are selected based on their proven track record of professional commitment and community dedication, commonly through fundraising and charity work, supporting the vulnerable or disadvantaged, mentoring and leadership or spreading community awareness.
