Seymour releases second book on Coast’s heritage

A NEW book on heritage places within the Fraser Coast has hit the shelves.

Titled 'Fraser Coast Heritage: People and Places', the book has eleven chapters which were written by Fraser Coast locals, and looks at the region's heritage places from different perspectives.

Deputy mayor George Seymour compiled and edited the publication also contributed a chapter on the historic Maryborough City Hall.

"The idea behind the book is that heritage places have special meaning for individuals and groups in our community and the stories in the book explore and document this connection," he said.

"We wanted to celebrate the role of heritage places in our community and share the history of our region."

Maryborough local Joe Eggmolesse also contributed a chapter about the Pacific Islander Hospital that was built for indentured labourers.

"For me, this building is a connection to my ancestors, the conditions upon which they were forced to work and the severe health conditions prevalent for the South Sea Islanders here," Joe said.

Other chapters include the Original Maryborough Site, Pialba Memorial Hall and the Urangan Pier.

It is the second book focussing on the region's heritage published by Cr Seymour.

In September last year he released Tangible Links.

The book notes 50 significant local heritage places.

The latest book costs $10 and is available at the Bond Store Museum, Customs House Museum and Hervey Bay Cultural Centre.
