Shark attack in Bay - for film

AN overturned hull is causing some consternation near Shelly Beach but the person most affected by the makeshift shipwreck is a movie character. Thankfully.

The character shall remain nameless. Best to say he or she meets a “grisly demise” in the waters of Hervey Bay this week and a great white shark is probably involved at some level.

“People are good. They are hanging back during filming,” Christine Williams, production co-ordinator for The Reef, said yesterday.

“It has all gone very well. The weather has been glorious.”

Director Andrew Traucki's second feature-length movie is in its second week of filming in Hervey Bay.

The Reef follows the misadventures of four friends whose holiday goes drastically wrong when their boat capsizes and a great white shark gets involved.

On its release next year, it will feature live footage of great white sharks, shot in South Australia.

The movie, set at the Great Barrier Reef, stars Damian Walshe-Howling, Gyton Grantley, Zoe Naylor, Adrienne Pickering and Kieran Darcy-Smith.

Walshe-Howling and Grantley will be well known from the Channel 9 hit Underbelly, while Naylor (McLeod's Daughters), Pickering (Our of the Blue) and Darcy-Smith (Animal Kingdom) will also have faces familiar to Fraser Coast residents who may spot them about town.

If you are one of about 35 people who auditioned for parts as movie doubles two weeks ago, then it's probably a good idea to keep your phone close today.

Ms Williams said yesterday that producers had whittled the contenders down to a shortlist and she expected to be contacting the successful candidates today.
