SHOCK DECISION: Sunshine Coast hospital CEO steps down

LONG serving Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service CEO Kevin Hegarty has announced he is leaving the role.

He will finish at the end of this month.

Mr Hegarty said he had made a commitment to his wife Judy not to seek an extension to a five-year contract he signed in 2012.

"Today I honour that commitment," he said.

"To leave at a time of my choosing after the successful opening of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the SCHHS so well positioned for the future is a good feeling.

"An almost 14 year-long 'to do list' as complete as I could have ever hoped for."

Health Minister Cameron Dick acknowledged Mr Hegarty's substantial contribution and long term leadership.

"His leadership and engagement with staff was evident, but the team he has led will I'm sure continue to provide the safe, quality care that he was always focussed on," he said.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board chairwoman Dr Lorraine Forguson said Mr Hegarty's 14-year tenure would be remembered for the realisation of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
