Woman shocked by 3m snake in bedroom

A TRINITY Park woman screamed and ran through her house after waking up to a 3m python just centimetres away from her face.

When Jan Nielson's dog Susie started pawing her and whimpering about 4am on Friday in her and husband Geoff's bedroom, she thought the cattle cross was misbehaving and wanted to jump into their bed.

"After about 20 minutes of this, I thought I had to say something to her and put her outside," Mrs Nielson said.

"So I rolled over and flicked the light on.

"As I rolled over, I saw this thing's head right next to me.

"I jumped up screaming that there was a snake in the bedroom!

"I never thought I could move that quickly for my age."

The python was believed to have entered the home through a door left open to the backyard.

"We think it was after our cat," Mrs Nielson said.

The terrified couple locked the errant snake in their bedroom, and contacted Matt Hagan from Cairns Snake Catcher, who was able to safely remove the reptile, and then later released it back into the wild - well away from bedrooms.

Mr Hagan said the incident was a reminder for Far North Queenslanders to ensure their homes were locked up at night time, particularly if they had pets.
